The former director has maintained his non-guilt concerning the indictments

Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has denied the charges to making false statements to lawmakers and obstructing a legislative process.

His legal representative entered the response on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer stated he would seek to have the case terminated for various factors including that his defendant, a detractor of former President Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was charged just days after Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they planned to present several petitions to throw out the proceedings before a court case, stating the government's case was spiteful and that a government lawyer was improperly designated to assume control of the legal matter.

The former director's proceedings was initially managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from the former president after his examination into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

James Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the court on mid-week, chatting with his legal team and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and child Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the Trump administration dismissed.

After listening to the judge state his legal protections and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, James Comey was asked if he understood the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the court.

Historical Information

The former director was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was fired about several months into Donald Trump's first term as president. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Russia and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey caused a counter-response from the Democratic party when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was examining political contender the candidate's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Clinton were not filed, resulting in disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys claim the former director provided false information to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he provided false information to the Senate by saying he had not approved someone at the agency to disclose to media organizations details about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also charge James Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, block and slow" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.

Public Statements

Through a recording Mr Comey shared to his social media after he was charged, he stated he was wrongly accused and alleged Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"My family and I have been aware for a long time that there are costs to challenging Mr Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Thus initiate a court case."

These allegations against the former director surfaced after Donald Trump published on digital channels demanding his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, charge the former director and others.
